New Work: Stone Lion tattoo by Natan

March 10th, 2010 by Micah

Just the other day Natan got the chance to tattoo this big stone lion piece on a young new client of his. In this piece, Natan really concentrated on experimenting with a couple of different techniques based around developing realistic light sources, subtly implying different textures, and balancing a variety of line weights. Even though it was this client’s first tattoo, he let Natan tattoo it large enough to fill up the majority of his ribs and sat through a full four hour session, allowing Natan to really pack in a lot of detail and refinement.

New Work by Micah: Warthog Skull

March 10th, 2010 by Micah

Just last Sunday I got to tattoo this black and grey warthog skull on my buddy Trevor’s arm. Trevor is one of my favorite Salem locals, a super metal dude with a big beard who rides around in our bike crew every day and I was psyched to get a chance to start some work on his arms. After tattooing a bunch of cartoon characters on his legs, he finally gave me the go-ahead to start work on filling up his arms with black and grey skulls, demons, zombies, and really anything else along those lines. We settled upon this warthog skull I drew up for him and got to work fleshing out some gaps in his sleeves.

As the shop apprentice, I’m always looking for some smaller, simpler pieces to help flesh out my portfolio. I’m currently pushing towards a more traditional style, so make sure to give me a ring in the shop here if you have anything in mind!

New Work: Fleur de Lis by Natan

February 17th, 2010 by Micah

Natan just completed this piece on our sailor friend, Gary, yesterday. Although he’s often away at sea for long stretches of time, Gary always makes sure to find some time to swing on by the shop to continue Natan’s work on his detailed fisherman sleeve. In addition to his ongoing sleeve, Gary requested that Natan tattoo a big gold fleur de lis on his shoulder for yesterday’s session. For this piece, Natan decided to really push his color theory by sinking rich blues, greens, and purples into the shadows to really make the striking chroma and texture of the gold pop out. Check out the results below and make sure to give us a call to book out your time with Natan for your custom piece today!

February 16th, 2010 by Micah

Around here, the winter months are always a key time for all of us to polish up on our painting game. Along with the rest of the crew, Natan has been fine tuning a lot of the paintings from his body of work and framing them up for gallery shows and the shop. Check out this large acrylic painting of Dainichi Nyorai Buddha which is characterized by Natan’s painterly emphasis on vivid, bright colors seated within a solid foundation of linework and drawing.

New Work by Matt: Raven and Roses

February 13th, 2010 by Micah

This past Friday, Matt tattooed this piece of a realistic raven strolling over a couple of roses on our shop friend, Donna. Always good for a conversation about music, art, or life in general, Donna was cool enough to just let Matt run ahead with this tattoo and make it something he would really enjoy working on. Matt ultimately whipped out this bright, saturated, and smooth piece, which Donna was thrilled to be the proud new owner of.

If you’re interested in talking to Matt about any new custom projects of any sort of wildlife, nature, birds, or other fun custom subjects, make sure to contact us over here at the shop and get yourself booked in for a consult today!

New Work by Matt: Birds on Forearm

February 13th, 2010 by Micah

Check out some new work recently completed by Matt of a couple birds on a forearm. In this piece, Matt utilized the painterly style that he’s known for to accentuate the soft gradients of tone and subtle chromatic shifts. He’s always a fan of working on projects that allow him a bit of freedom to really flow in his own direction and this ended up being a great piece for him to experiment with a couple techniques of focus, color theory, and shading. If you have any soft, painterly, or illustrative work in mind, make sure to give us a ring and book up your time with Matt today!

New Work by Natan: Koi-Fish Halfsleeve

January 26th, 2010 by Micah

A couple of weeks ago Natan had a chance to finish up one of his finest Japanese koi fishes to date! His repeat client and shop friend, Mickel, had been coming in for a couple of hours of work on his half sleeve every few weeks and now his piece is completely done, fine-tuned, and healed. Natan utilized the freedom Mickel gave him in working on his half-sleeve to explore some intricate color theory relationships, challenge himself to approach traditional finger waves from a new angle, and keep a tight control on balancing hyper-bright areas of detail against strong, solid, dark wind-bars in the background.

Natan is always excited to dive into new large-scale custom work that challenges him to top or re-invent subjects from his past body of work, so make sure to ring us up or just pop on by the shop if you’ve got any ideas you would like to work on with him!
