Witch City tattoo artist Matt Maguire has a brand new art show now open at the Gulu Gulu Cafe in Salem, Massachusetts (http://www.gulu-gulu.com/). Matt’s been hard at work on a whole new body of pieces, which the kind folks over at The Gulu were gracious enough to host for the month of August.

Next Thursday, August 12th we’ll be joining Matt down at the Cafe for the opening party from 7pm-8pm so make sure to stop by to grab a beer, have a bite to eat, and check out everything that Matt’s been up to in the art world outside of tattooing!

Recently, local Emerson College graduate student, Josh Couillard, stopped by our shop to ask us a few questions, check out the art, and interview owner/artist Natan Alexander. Josh’s article profiles the growth of custom tattoos, the development and direction of our shop, and how a pre-existing and sturdy foundation in fine art is absolutely essential for tattoo artists aiming to create the best work possible.

Natan to Speak at Museum Lecture!

Natan will be featured as a guest speaker at an upcoming lecture on tattooing at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art! As part of an upcoming exhibition of renowned tattoo artist, Dr. Lakra, the museum will host a panel discussion of contemporary tattoo culture, the history of tattooing, and the growth and development of the medium. We invite you to join us on Thursday, April 15th, at the Institute of Contemporary Art (100 Northern Avenue, Boston, MA) as we listen in on Natan’s personal dissection of tattooing, as informed by his 17 years of experience in the field.

The ICA comments on Lakra:
Jerónimo López Ramírez, also known as Dr. Lakra, is a renowned tattoo artist who lives and works in Oaxaca, Mexico. Under his pseudonym, loosely translating as “Dr. Delinquent,” he draws over vintage printed materials and found objects rather than skin, manipulating images of pin-up girls, 1940s Mexican businessmen, luchadores, and Japanese sumo wrestlers.

Referencing diverse body art traditions from Chicano, Maori, Thai, and Philippine cultures, Dr. Lakra layers spiders, skulls, crosses, serpents, and devils over these existing images. Playful, naughty, and often intentionally vulgar, his work challenges social norms by blurring cultural identities.

Dr. Lakra, the artist’s first solo exhibition in the U.S., will present works from a variety of series and a newly-commissioned mural.

Micah Featured in Book of Skull Art!

Resident shop apprentice, Micah, has one of his drawings featured in the recently published book, Skull Book Volume 1. Collecting together black and white artwork of skulls by tattoo artists around the world, the first volume of the Skull Book ranges from realistic and representational work to stylized and abstract pieces.

Micah contributed the following ball-point pen drawing from an on-going series he is currently pursuing. Keep your eyeballs on their site, www.skullsbook.com, for information on the publication of their second volume, in which Micah has four more featured drawings.

New Work by Natan: Spade of Skulls

Natan recently got the chance to design and tattoo this black and grey spade of skulls piece on a repeat client of his. Given a brief description and a loose sketch of his client’s general idea, Natan hit the ground running and came up with the following tattoo:

Natan was happy for the chance to do some more custom work on one of his collectors and friends, Chris Tango. Chris has been coming to get tattooed by Natan at Witch City Ink and Lightwave Tattoos for a couple of years now and has a number of Natan pieces decorating his arms. Since he already has a number of realistic black and grey skeletal type pieces, Chris opted for the more graphic and bold design of this tattoo and was thrilled with the result.

Witch City Ink Art Gallery Showing!

For the month of January, all of the artists here from Witch City Ink are featured in a group art gallery show at Front Street Cafe here in Salem!

Throughout the winter months, we have all been tirelessly working away at a number of pieces ranging in medium from oil paintings on hand carved wood to watercolors on paper to work with glass and photography. We are now proud to present the second in a series of shows we will be maintaining at our favorite local coffee house, Front Street Cafe, right in the heart of town.

So make sure stop on by, grab a cup of coffee, and check out the new art!
