Lately Matt’s been working on really refining his portrait work and pushing the envelope with his black and grey realism. Last week, he got the chance to tattoo this Nietzsche portrait on shop regular, Brad. Brad’s been coming in to collect different small pieces from all of the different artists here for awhile, but this was his first big realistic piece.

Coming from a painting background, Matt always revels in the chance to work on really soft, smooth, and painterly type projects, so this piece was perfect for him! New Work by Matt: Angel-Piano!

Here’s a new piece that Matt sketched up and tattooed the other week. Matt worked with his client for awhile on this one, drawing everything into place, moving things around, and adding in some stylized bars of light into the background. This piece is a strong example of Matt’s style: a sort of illustrative realism which integrates light line-work with soft blends, concentrated blacks, and restricted areas of color. He’s always looking for more fun, large, custom work such as this, so make sure to get in touch if you’ve got anything in mind!

New Work by Matt: Raven and Roses

This past Friday, Matt tattooed this piece of a realistic raven strolling over a couple of roses on our shop friend, Donna. Always good for a conversation about music, art, or life in general, Donna was cool enough to just let Matt run ahead with this tattoo and make it something he would really enjoy working on. Matt ultimately whipped out this bright, saturated, and smooth piece, which Donna was thrilled to be the proud new owner of.

New Work by Matt: Birds on Forearm

Check out some new work recently completed by Matt of a couple birds on a forearm. In this piece, Matt utilized the painterly style that he’s known for to accentuate the soft gradients of tone and subtle chromatic shifts. He’s always a fan of working on projects that allow him a bit of freedom to really flow in his own direction and this ended up being a great piece for him to experiment with a couple techniques of focus, color theory, and shading. Here is a watercolor painting of a dragon and a tiger embraced in a battle. Done in more of a traditional style, but I still managed to put my own spin on it. I’d love to do some more vibrant and creative pieces like this for tattoos in the future!

Vulrures eating elephant painting

When I’m not tattooing I like to paint and draw. Here is the rough drawing of vultures eating an elephant done on 18 by 24 inch masonite. The Idea came from a love of nature, life and death all grouped into one.

This is the second phase of the painting where the basic colors are put down to start defining the objects. I like using acrylic paint because it allows me to work quick.

Here is the finished piece. I add the brightest colors as the last phase of the painting. I’ve always been a fan of impressionism over hyper realism because it captures a mood and feel of a piece, and leaves the process open to the viewer.

Mike Myers Tattoo by Matt Maguire

This is a color tattoo I did on a guys leg of Mike Myers from the movie Halloween. It’s a good counter balance to a Freddy Kruger tattoo he has on his other leg.
